About Auburn
Auburn was incorporated in 1845, covers just under 29 square miles in Rockingham County and had 5,946 residents at the 2020 census. It sits directly east of Manchester, and yet it has stayed genuinely rural in a way that towns that close to a city usually do not.
The reason is largely Massabesic Lake. The lake runs to more than 2,500 acres across western Auburn and eastern Manchester, and it is the public water supply for the city. Manchester, along with Chester, Candia, Hooksett and Derry, pays Auburn in the region of three million dollars a year for access to it. Protecting a drinking water supply keeps a lot of land undeveloped, which is why the town still looks the way it does.
