About Brentwood
Brentwood was incorporated in 1742 by Benning Wentworth and covers 17 square miles of mostly rural, residential land, drained by the Exeter River and its tributaries. The 2020 census counted 4,490 residents.
It became the county seat of Rockingham County in 1997, when the administrative offices moved here, which makes it an unusual place: a small rural town that happens to hold the county's courts and records. Commercial activity is modest and concentrated along Calef Road. Exeter sits immediately to the east and Route 101 puts the seacoast within easy reach.
For building, Brentwood behaves like the rural town it is rather than the county seat it also is. Lots are generous, the Exeter River and its tributaries mean drainage is worth taking seriously, and detached structures suit the landscape better than large attached boxes.
