About Nashua

Nashua is the second largest city in New Hampshire and in northern New England generally, with 91,322 residents at the 2020 census. It sits right on the Massachusetts line, which is a large part of why it grew the way it did. The Merrimack River forms the eastern boundary and the Nashua River runs straight through the middle of the city.

People were here early. The area was settled around 1654 as a fur trading post, incorporated as the town of Dunstable in 1746, renamed Nashua in 1836 and re-incorporated as a city in 1853. The Nashua Manufacturing Company put up the mills that drove the nineteenth century, and the last of them closed in 1949. Sanders Associates, which is BAE Systems now, is what brought the work back.

For garages, the interesting thing about Nashua is how varied the housing is. There are tight downtown blocks near the Millyard, postwar neighborhoods that went up fast, and newer subdivisions further out with proper side yards. Three different sets of constraints inside one city line, which is why we never quote a Nashua job without looking at the lot first.

What We'll Want To Know About Your Lot

Nashua homeowners usually call with a size in mind and not much else, which is fine. These are the things we work out together when we come and look. None of them need an answer before you pick up the phone.

  • How many vehicles are going inside, and how many are only ever in the driveway
  • Whether the garage attaches to the house or stands on its own
  • Where the property lines actually run, rather than where the fence is
  • How water moves across the lot after a heavy rain or a fast thaw
  • Whether the driveway can take the turn into a new bay
  • What the house is clad in, so the new build matches rather than competes
  • Whether you want a loft now, or the structure to allow one later
  • What the city will want in the way of permits for the size you have in mind

Three Cities In One

The Millyard, The Postwar Blocks, And Everything South

Close to the Millyard and the older downtown streets, lots are narrow and the houses are old enough that a garage was never part of the plan. Those jobs are usually a single bay, carefully sited, and they live or die on the setback rules.

The neighborhoods that filled in after the war are a different proposition. They tend to have a usable side yard and a driveway already running past the house, which is close to ideal for a detached two car build with room to walk around it.

Out toward the southern and western edges of the city, lots open up again and the conversation changes completely. That is where we get asked about three bays, workshops, and living space over the top, because for once there is room to put it.

Same city, three completely different builds. It is why we would rather walk your lot than guess from an address.
