About Rye
Rye holds the oldest claim in the state. The first settlement in New Hampshire was made at Odiorne's Point in 1623, under the name Pannaway Plantation, and that ground is now Odiorne Point State Park and home to the Seacoast Science Center. The town itself was incorporated in 1785.
It covers 36.8 square miles, though nearly two thirds of that is water, and it includes four of the nine Isles of Shoals. The 2020 census counted 5,543 residents and the town is comfortably affluent.
