About Merrimack
Merrimack was incorporated on 2 April 1746 and sits between the two largest cities in the state, with the Merrimack and Souhegan rivers running through it. The 2020 census recorded 26,632 residents, which makes it one of the larger towns we serve.
Anheuser-Busch has run a brewery here since 1970, their easternmost and one of the smallest plants in the country. Beyond that the town is mostly what it looks like: a bedroom community that grew out of farmland because it happens to sit exactly between Nashua and Manchester.
That history gives Merrimack a lot of postwar and later housing on decent lots, which is a good starting point for a garage. Most of the calls we get here are about outgrowing what is already there rather than building the first one.

There are two ways to close it. Where the lot has room to the side, widening the existing garage into a second bay is often shorter and less disruptive than people expect, since the foundation, the roof line and the approach already exist in part.
Where widening is not possible, a detached structure elsewhere on the lot gives you more freedom and frequently a better result. It can be sized properly, sited where it works rather than where the old one happened to go, and built with the height for storage overhead.

Homeowners often assume expanding a garage is nearly as big a job as building a new one. Sometimes it is. Often it is not, and the difference comes down to what is already in the ground.
If the existing slab is sound and there is usable land on the open side, the work is a matter of extending the foundation, moving the exterior wall outward, framing and tying in the new roof section, and fitting a second door. You keep the existing approach and you keep the connection to the house if there is one.
What changes the sums is anything structural that has to be undone. A roof that cannot be extended cleanly, a slab that has moved, a wall carrying more than it looks like it carries. Those are worth establishing before you build a budget around the cheerful version.
