About Milford
Milford was incorporated in 1794, having separated from Amherst, and sits on the Souhegan River with 16,131 residents at the 2020 census. The town center is the Oval, formally Union Square, which is worth noting mainly because it is neither an oval nor a square but a triangle.
This is the Granite Town. Quarrying here supplied stone across the country, including the pillars of the United States Treasury building in Washington. Only one small quarry was still working as of 2017, but the name and the identity stuck.
Today Milford is the retail and manufacturing center of the Souhegan Valley, which gives it a broader mix of housing than the towns around it. Older village properties near the Oval, mill-era streets, postwar development and newer building on the edges, all inside one town line.

Close to the Oval and along the older streets, lots are tighter and the houses older. Those jobs are about fitting a garage in without crowding the property, and they live or die on the setbacks and on getting the proportions right against a period building.
The postwar neighbourhoods are the easiest work in town. A usable side yard, a driveway already running past the house, and enough room for a detached two car structure with space to walk around it.
