About Pembroke
Pembroke was incorporated in 1759 by Benning Wentworth and named for Henry Herbert, the ninth Earl of Pembroke. Before that it was Suncook, from the Pennacook Abenaki name for the river. It covers nearly 23 square miles of Merrimack County with 7,207 residents at the 2020 census.
Three rivers define it. The Merrimack forms the southwestern border, and the Suncook and Soucook mark other boundaries. Those rivers ran the mills: Pembroke Mills, Webster Manufacturing and China Manufacturing all produced print cloth here, and the clay along the riverbanks supported a brickmaking trade. The Concord and Portsmouth Railroad arrived in 1852 and the town grew around all of it.
There is a pleasing piece of trivia attached to the place. The centre of population of New Hampshire sits close to Pembroke's town center, which makes this about as geographically central as the state gets.

Pembroke has the two-part character common to old mill towns. The village around Suncook is denser, with mill-era housing on smaller lots, while the rest of the town is more open and more recently built.
