About Bedford
Bedford was incorporated in 1750 and named for John Russell, the fourth Duke of Bedford. It covers 33 square miles on the western bank of the Merrimack, rises to 845 feet at Holbrook Hill, and had 23,322 residents at the 2020 census.
It is one of the wealthiest communities in the state, and it shows in the housing. Most of what stands here went up during the rapid growth of the late twentieth century, on generous lots, set well back from roads that were never meant to carry this much traffic. Interstate 293, the Everett Turnpike and Route 101 all run through, which is exactly why the town grew the way it did.
