About Brookline
Brookline was incorporated in 1769, covers about 20 square miles and sits hard against the Massachusetts line on its southern and southeastern edges. The 2020 census counted 5,639 residents, up 13 percent from 2010, which makes it one of the faster growing towns in this corner of the state.
The Nissitissit River runs ten miles from Potanipo Pond southeast into Massachusetts and is well known locally for its trout. The town's older economy was lumber, charcoal and cask making, and it has kept its small town habits: shared K-6 arrangements with Hollis, and an annual Chowder Cook-Off that people genuinely turn out for.
Growth that fast means a lot of newer houses on lots that still have room around them. It also means a fair number of households who moved up from Massachusetts and are used to less space than they now have. Garage projects here are frequently about finally having somewhere to put everything.
