About Hooksett
Hooksett was incorporated in 1822 and sits on both banks of the Merrimack in Merrimack County, with 14,871 residents at the 2020 census. The name may come from a hook-shaped island in the river, or from an old fishing term; nobody is entirely certain which.
The falls here powered lumber mills and a brickmaking industry, and the clay banks of the Merrimack supplied brick across the region. Robie's Country Store is a National Historic Landmark and a standing fixture of the presidential primary, which is a strange thing for a general store to be and a very New Hampshire thing to be.
Geographically the town is in a useful spot, halfway between Manchester and Concord, and that is how most people here use it. It is a commuting town in both directions. Housing runs from older river village properties to newer subdivisions further out, so what a garage project looks like depends heavily on which part of Hooksett you are in.
