About Candia
Candia was settled in 1743 under the name Charmingfare and incorporated in 1763, when it was set off from Chester. The name is an odd one: Benning Wentworth, the colonial governor, had once been held prisoner on the island of Candia, which is an old name for Crete, and the town ended up carrying it.
It covers just over 30 square miles in the southeastern corner of Rockingham County and had 4,013 residents at the 2020 census. Manchester is about twenty minutes away, which puts it comfortably inside commuting range while leaving it firmly rural in character.
That is a good combination for building. Lots here have room, the pace of development has been slow enough that the town has not filled in, and homeowners tend to be thinking in terms of what they want on the property rather than what will physically fit.
