About Exeter
Exeter was founded on 3 April 1638 by John Wheelwright, who bought the land from the sagamore Wehanownowit and named it for Exeter in Devon. In 1775 the Provincial Congress moved out of Portsmouth and Exeter became the capital of New Hampshire, which it remained for fourteen years.
Phillips Exeter Academy was established here in 1781 and is still one of the best known preparatory schools in the country. The Exeter River becomes the tidal Squamscott in the middle of town, and the downtown holds a genuinely impressive run of Federal and Greek Revival buildings, some dating to the sixteen hundreds.
All of which makes Exeter one of the more demanding places we build. A garage going in near the historic downtown has to earn its place. Further out, the town has plenty of later housing on ordinary lots where the job is much more straightforward, and we work across both.
