About Derry
Derry sits in Rockingham County about 12 miles southeast of Manchester, with 34,317 residents at the 2020 census. It was first settled by Scots-Irish families in 1719 as part of Londonderry, and only incorporated separately in 1827, taking its name from the city in Ireland.
Robert Frost lived on a farm here from 1900 to 1911, and the Robert Frost Farm is a National Historic Landmark and state park now. Pinkerton Academy, founded in 1814, is still running and still serves as the high school for Derry and several surrounding towns, which makes it one of the oldest schools of its kind in the country.
The Derry most homeowners live in took shape after the war. I-93 cut across the southwestern corner, Boston and Manchester both became commutable, and the population climbed steadily through the 1990s before leveling off around 2000. That means a lot of houses built between roughly 1960 and 1995, on lots with actual elbow room.
