About Newington
Newington had 811 residents at the 2020 census, which makes it comfortably the smallest town in our service area by population and one of the smallest in the state. It was incorporated in 1764 and covers 12.4 square miles, of which only about eight are land.
The water is the point. Great Bay sits to the west and the Piscataqua River runs along the northeastern side, which leaves a small town almost surrounded by tidal water. The former Pease Air Force Base closed in 1991 and was redeveloped as the Pease International Tradeport, bringing a great deal of commercial activity into a town with very few residents.
So the residential side of Newington is genuinely small, genuinely old in places, and surrounded by salt water on two sides. Garage work here is coastal work, and the properties tend to be individual enough that nothing is standard.
